The club finals were held on Saturday 23rd July – the weather was perfect and the grounds looked great. This year we wanted to encourage a larger entry than in recent years and we achieved this. It was good to see new entrants and winners this year. As always, the match scheduling was a challenge; with two semi-finals played late on the evening before finals and many players in several finals. However, we got there and all the matches were played on the grass and in daylight!

A brief report of the matches played and the full results are included below but first a few words of thanks. These events don’t just happen – they require a great deal of effort from a lot of people over a period of months. Thanks to Trevor for all his work in preparing the courts for finals day (and all season) and to all these people who contributed to the planning, organisation, umpiring, and generally making this event work…Sue Revell, Val Cockbain, the tennis committee (Richard Checkley, Judith Mills, Julia Wright, Carole Clegg, Claire Emerson and Callum Lloyd), Martin Ruddick, Andy Watson, Pete Mackenzie, Chris Clegg, Pete Dommett and Matt Hall, Debbie and her team in the kitchen, the bar staff, everyone who came along to watch the matches and enjoy this important club event and finally, a big thank you to Richard Lane, the Club’s President for supporting the event and staying to the end to present the trophies.

The day kicked off with the under 18 singles; a three set battle between Oliver Hungate and Emre Ober, with Oliver winning through in the end. It was a great match to watch and set the bar very high for the adult finals to follow. The men's and ladies’ open singles were both hard fought matches, Tom Deering won his first BCC title defeating last year's champ, Josh Sacks, in two very close sets. I am sure there will be many rematches to look forward to. The ladies’ open singles was a re-run of last year's final with Claire retaining her title after a long three set match against Val Cockbain during what was probably the hottest part of the day. In the men’s doubles final Tom Deering and Ahmet Feridun defeated last year's winners Duncan Shrimpton and Simon Parr. In the ladies’ doubles final, Suzie Barker and Liz Maguire reclaimed the title they won in 2014 defeating Sally Hearn and Julia Wright in two sets. The open events ended with the mixed final – Tom Deering and Claire Emerson added to their singles titles with a two set win over Suzie Barker and Duncan Shrimpton.

The handicap events gave the spectators some excellent matches to enjoy. Setting the handicaps for these events is a notoriously difficult task, and this year as in previous years we got it mostly right but perhaps not 100% - we did our best, aiming to reflect previous results, pairings, team position etc. but there is no formula. I hope that the spirit of these events is to have a go and work with the allotted handicap, even if that does mean you have to win 4 points to get to 0! In the men’s handicap singles, Dan King had his first win of the day, beating Phil Adamson in two sets. Dan then paired up with Matt Crocker to take on Brian Butterworth and Peter Dommett in the men’s doubles. Dan and Matt won the match winning the deciding championship tie-break set. The ladies’ singles was a Mackenzie v Mackenzie duel with Rosie winning in two sets. Rosie followed up her singles victory with a win in the ladies’ handicap doubles; Rosie and Liz Maguire took on Clare Goss-Sampson and Jane Skynner, beating them in two sets. Jane Skynner and Brian Butterworth defeated Carole Clegg and Peter Dommett in the handicap mixed final.

That’s it for the 2016 club tournament. Martin Ruddick’s photos from finals day are on the club website gallery. Further social tournaments are planned over the next few months and we are hoping to run a winter club tournament with finals in the airhall. Look out for information on the noticeboard and in your inbox.
