Squash & Racketball Report 2014

In 2014 there were a lot of individual accomplishments as well as good team results. As always BCC fielded strong teams in the Kent County Squash Leagues, Division 1, 2, 4 and 6. Our ladies team (Cathy Murray (C), Jenny Sharpe, Alison Chapman, Carolyn Rushworth, Vanessa Tickner and Sandra Skillcorn) battled well in the ladies Kent league, and would welcome new comers!!

Racketball also have been competing well against the other clubs in the Kent Leagues (Sam Stabler, Lewis Ryall, Daniel Sweeney (C), Gary Phelps, Mickey Beaumont, Alastair McMeckan and Phil Groves), finishing mid table.

In the Kent winter squash league, the 1st team came 3rd, second team came 6th and the 4th team came 5th. The 3rd team won their league with an a 100% unbeaten record – with the help of Michel Van Oorschot, Tony Davies (C), Daniel Sweeney, Keeley Seamons, James Brooker, Mike Steel, Paul Roberts, Alastair McMeckan, Scott Hews and Nick Barnes.

The Kent summer league saw the 2nd team coming 4th, the 3rd team came 2nd. The 1st team were involved in a top of the table clash, chasing their first Division 1 league championship. Unfortunately the 1st's were relying on another result from another club to get a result for us to win the league and ended up a creditable 2nd. First team players included: - Neil Baker, Lewis Ryall, Sam Stabler, James McMeckan (C), Matt Horder and Ed Henley. This is the second time BCC 1st's have just missed out on the summer league, maybe it will be third time lucky in 2015

BCC hosted the squash club championships for 2014. Over the two-week period, squash members battled it out in the main event, handicap and over age group competition. As always we were entertained by some great matches.

The winners and runner-up’s were –
Main – Lewis Ryall bt Michel van Oorschot 3/0
Main Plate – Stewart Gotts bt Jon Santilli 3/0
Handicap – Ian McMeckan bt Daniel Sweeney 3/0
Over 40’s – Stewart Gotts bt Tony Davies 3/1

Lewis Ryall & Sam Stabler were unbeaten in the Kent Doubles Circuit 2013/14, winning the Rodmersham Open, Danny Gamble Open, Bromley Cricket Club Open and Joes Lockyer Open.

James McMeckan and Lewis Ryall won the Scottish doubles open competition.

Keeley Seamons and James McMeckan won the Scottish doubles open competition.

Andy Brackstone entered a team in the Jersey Team Open. Lewis Ryall, Matt Horder were joined by Zeb Young (Limpsfield), Joe Magor (Canterbury) to play against the likes of Richie Fellows (PSA ranking 100) and Ben Ford (Highest ranking 80).

For those who are unaware the festival has been running for around 30yrs and is based at the Jersey squash club with the matches played at three other venues. They’re normally 5 or 6 divisions each with and A & B section of 4 teams, therefore between 40 and 48 teams.

The team came 2nd in their box and 4th overall out of 40 teams, so a great achievement by all.

Tony Davies runs the internal squash leagues – new competitors always welcome – see the squash board.

Every Saturday, Ray Lanagan runs a  “Club afternoon” – from 2.00 until 4.45  - turn up, play a mixture of squash and/or racquetball and follow – up with a social drink in the bar.
