BROMLEY FURY UNDER 9’S –  RUNNERS UP BROMLEY FESTIVAL 2016

On Sunday 3rd July Bromley Cricket Club were delighted to welcome over 150 junior players to our under 9 soft ball festival.  This is the second year that the tournament has run and it demonstrated that there is currently a large number of young players in the local area playing the game and that there is continued growth in the number of female players taking part.  Most importantly the weather for once was set fair, allowing every game to be played in warm, dry conditions, anyone who has played cricket this year can appreciate that this can never be taken for granted!

The tournament was eventually won by Beckenham CC who defeated the Bromley Fury in an outstanding final which saw them score 20 in the last over with incredibly skilful and powerful hitting.  Beckenham were deserved winners going undefeated through the whole day and playing consistently high level of cricket in every game.

The day was an opportunity for many young players to play competitive matches for the first time, the rules meant that during the game every player was presented with the opportunity to bat and bowl in equal amounts.  The benefit of this was shown in the performance of the Fury who not only improved throughout the day but on a number of occasions exceeded what we believed they were capable of.  The standard of fielding and in particular the catching meant that there were very few missed opportunities to take wickets and showed that the work being undertaken at training is paying off.

As a club we are immensely proud to enter 5 teams in to our own tournament as well as sending 2 under 11 teams to represent the club in the Holmesdale festival.  It is experiences such these that will expose our players to competitive situations where their basic skills are tested against players of varying ability.  It is almost impossible to identify all of the players that took part in the day although we will be posting a full name list of those who took part that said there are a couple of young players who deserve special mention.  Edd Thorpe, Ella Cain and William Davies all performed exceptionally well throughout what ended up a very long day.
